The long awaited launch of Urchin 7 software from Google took place last week. Although the official Google Analytics blog has not yet posted, I'm not breaking any NDAs though this post.
As my colleague David Lines puts it:
"Urchin 7 is the latest version of Urchin web analytics software from Google. It includes important new, and much improved, features compared with Urchin 6 – which was itself a much under-estimated package, probably because of its low price. Urchin 7 is a serious contender for mid-to-upper range enterprise web analytics applications and is the natural alternative to Google Analytics for organizations which need attributes available only from a service hosted on local servers.
Although the price of Urchin has been increased to better match its much up-rated capabilities, it remains well below that of supposedly equivalent competitive products. We have yet to hear a good reason why companies should spend more than twice the price of an Urchin licence for an outdated, competitive product with less capability.
Urchin 7 is available only from Urchin Certified Partners (like ivantage) who are authorized to sell licences and support them with a full range of services – from installation and customization through to training and support."
Many new features detailed on our site's Urchin 7 features page, but the one key one is the new, very Google Analytics-like Urchin 7 User Interface:
"Urchin 7 features a completely reworked and advanced reporting UI. Now very similar to Google Analytics, it has new styling, easy-to-read graphic charts and navigation elements which provide more flexibility and power for data analysis."
You can download Urchin 7 on our site and you can contact us for a demo or to talk through the features.
Urchin 7 pricing and upgrade policy:
Urchin is £6,660 ($9,995) whereas Urchin 6 was £1,995 ($2,995)
"Google’s pricing policy for Urchin is that all upgrades contained within a single major version number (i.e. 5, 6 or 7) are supplied free of charge but that there is typically an upgrade charge to move from an earlier major version to a later one (e.g. from Urchin 6 to Urchin 7).
The upgrade charge is calculated as: (£price of new version less £price paid for previous version).
In the case of an upgrade from Urchin 6 to Urchin 7, the calculation is (typically) £6,660 - £1,995 = £4,665.
You will immediately notice that the price of an Urchin 7 licence is a little more than 3 times the price of an Urchin 6 licence. Google believe that Urchin 7 is now in the ‘Enterprise class’ for Web analytics and has raised its price to be more like, say, Webtrends."
